Review: 1105 Yakima Street by Debbie Macomber

You’ve probably heard that my wife has left me. Rachel’s pregnant, and she says that she can’t handle the stress in our household anymore. My thirteen-year-old daughter, Jolene, is jealous of her. Maybe it’s my fault. As a widower I spoiled her – Jolene was reading over my shoulder just now and says that’s not true. She claims Rachel ruined everything. But that’s not true. The real question is: How can I get my wife back? I don’t even know where she is. She’s not with Teri Polgar or any of her other friends from the salon. The other question is. . . when will Jolene grow up and stop acting like such a brat? Of course, I’m not the only one in town with problems. Linc Wyse’s father-in-law is trying to destroy his business. And you know Charlotte Rhodes? Seems she’s becoming forgetful, and the family’s worried about her and Ben. Lots of other stuff going on – but Rachel is better at keeping up with it than I am. If you have any idea where my wife is, please give me a call. Please. —Bruce Peyton

I've come to love the Cedar Cove Series so much that I hate for it to end...This town and all its people have brought me joy in so many ways. It feels like I'm leaving my hometown and I have to move someplace else. It's really sad but according to Debbie, we will see these characters on her new series. I think the first book is entitled, The Inn at Rose Harbor. More on that on the coming days ahead.  The last book I've read from this series was 1022 Evergreen Place, and I kinda have to admit that I've forgotten about that book already. There's a gap of one year from each book release and that's a lot of time right? No worries though, the good thing that Debbie does, is that she manages to give the readers the right information about the previous book for you to be able to bridge the story together and I love that about her...

Let's now focus on this particular book, 1105 Yakima Street. This is the story of Bruce, Jolene and Rachel. Like all the Cedar Cove novels, this one is as good like its predecessors. I get an update on all the characters and what they've been up to. It's nice to learn that everything is well and in order when it comes to their lives. I love happy endings! Unlike the other people in Cedar Cove, Bruce and Rachel are having problems with Jolene, I'm really annoyed with this kid. Before Rachel and Bruce got married, Jolene was very close to Rachel, they became friends and were inseparable ever since. They go out and did things together. Bruce and Rachel also thought that it was the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. After they got married, things changed for the worse. Jolene suddenly had an abrupt change of heart. She became jealous of Rachel and tried outrageous pranks to get Bruce's attention and love.

This kind of behavior is common when a single parent finds a new partner in his/her life. The children usually will not be receptive to big changes especially if it were to happen suddenly and without even considering the child's feelings. So I can understand where Jolene is coming from. But I don't agree with her ways in getting her father's attention. It's childish and selfish at the same time. Rachel was greatly affected in all of this and decided not to live with Bruce anymore, towards the end of the book, Jolene started to warm up to the idea that Bruce loves Rachel too much and I can only hope that things will get better on the next book entitled 1225 Christmas Tree Lane. I am hoping that Bruce and Rachel will have their happily ever after.

Behind the Screen #2

Behind the Screen is a cool new meme hosted by Inga @ Me and Reading ! It's where we talk about some of the things going on "Behind the Screen" that week. Check out her blog!

  • Book News
The paperback edition of A Dance With Dragons by G.R.R. Martin is finally available! But I'm really skeptical if I will buy a copy. I'm a huge fan of the series but I must admit that I've forgotten the story of the previous four books in the series...It's taken forever for George to finish this fifth installment. Now I just want to wait for the 6th and 7th book to be published so I can read them all and won't have to wait years to know what will happen next! But I might have a change of heart, my birthday is coming soon so I'll just make a list and include A Dance With Dragons. Also, I just found out that JK Rowling has a new book for adults! That is sooooo exciting! Can't wait!!!
  • Bookshelf
I have, like, 20 books on my TBR pile. It just keeps on growing!!!

  • While Reading
Work is hectic but I find time to read, mostly when I get home and dinner is over. I like to read during the night, when all is peaceful and quiet. I tend to absorb what I'm reading best when I'm all alone inside my room.

In My Mailbox #46: The Butcher Is Back!

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by  The Story Siren.
In My Mailbox time peeps! This time around, I decided to give Jim Butcher another chance! I gave a not-so-great review on the first book, Furies of Calderon, I had mixed feelings about the whole plot and I was a bit worried about the series as a whole, whether if it was as good as the others I've read, would it entertain and keep me interested and a whole bunch of other reasons. Furies of Calderon was a bit slow on its pacing and some of the characters weren't as realistic enough for me.

Academ's Fury
Cursor's Fury
Captain's Fury

And now...I'm giving this series another shot to redeem itself. I've read spoiler free reviews and all of them are positive that books two to four is way better than the first one. Actually, there's book five and six but I don't want to chance it again if it turned out that these three books is a bad read. So I'll buy the last two if it turns out that the series is worth it!

Review: Partner In Crime by J.A. Jance

An up-and-coming African American artist has been murdered on  Sheriff Joanna Brady’s turf in Cochise County, Arizona. Unfortunately the victim happens to be in the Washington State Attorney General’s Witness Protection Program. As the most recent hire in AG’s Special Homicide Investigation Team, J.P. Beaumont gets the call. He reluctantly heads off for Bisbee, Arizona where he tangles not only with Joanna Brady and a contract killer but with some of his own personal demons as well. When two top-drawer and independent minded investigators head-on, you can’t expect the result to be sweetness and light. After all, sometimes having two lead detectives on a single case is one detective too many.

Hand of Evil was the first book I've read from Ms. Jance, if you could skim my review section, (please do!) you'll find out that I didn't enjoy the book that much. Maybe because the fact that it was the third book in the series and that I skipped reading the two previous ones greatly affected my perception for the whole book. That's what you get when you don't read the first book in a series, so readers, do not follow my example. On the other  hand, Partner In Crime, is also a series, I think it's the tenth one, not sure. Don't get me wrong, I purchased these two books last year, and I'm well aware that they belong to a series of books, I like taking chances, but sometimes, it backfires.

Partner In Crime however was absolutely precious! J.A. Jance has created a world of suspense and mystery in Cochise County, Arizona. I very well enjoyed the whodunit chase that sheriff Joanna and a reluctant Beaumont conducted throughout the story. They have some problems along the way of solving this case, Joanna was a bit skeptical on allowing Beaumont to interfere with her investigation, and she's not happy at all that they think that she can't handle the pressure in apprehending the culprit. With their combined forces they've managed to solve the case and all is at peace again in Cochise County...Highly recommended! I'll be looking for more Joanna Brady novels since I think she's grown in me.
